Family

Activities for children and parents

Bring everyone. Children are welcome at every event. Most gatherings are scheduled weekend afternoons and early evenings so the whole family can attend together. In 2024, the grandparents enjoyed the folk art workshops as much as the kids did.

Performances, exhibitions, demonstrations

See live music and dance performances up close, and enjoy opportunities to speak directly with the artists afterward. The 2024 festival filled the hall with Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Indian classical music, and walls of Indian folk art. The 2026-27 seasonal festivals are built around this same kind of mainstage program.

Wellness Seeker

Yoga, meditation, Ayurveda, conscious living

Yoga and wellness sessions during Wonderful India start with the breath, stillness, and the philosophy behind it. Sessions are friendly to beginners and taught by people who practice daily. A whole cycle, April to June 2027, is dedicated to the topic.

Lectures, philosophy, history, masterclasses

If you enjoy learning and discussing new ideas with experts, you will feel right at home. In 2024, speakers presented on topics spanning from 10 big ideas from Indian philosophy to mathematical rhythmic devices in Carnatic music to the influence of Indian classical music on world music. The 2026-27 series includes engaging talks, masterclasses, and discussion panels in the lineup.

Food Lover

Regional cuisines and culinary traditions

Indian food includes dozens of regional cuisines, and this 14-month journey includes plenty of opportunities to try some of those authentic flavors. From sweets and festival foods to calm Ayurvedic recipes, you’ll experience a wide variety of cuisines. Food vendors are selected by an application process emphasizing authentic regional cooking, so you’ll have the opportunity to experience the foods people actually eat at home.

Indian / Diaspora Community

Celebrate, contribute, reconnect

This is the place to celebrate Indian culture out loud in Austin, with your parents and children, and even with your colleagues who might have never been to a Diwali celebration before. Come as a guest and enjoy the festivities. Or, if you have a skill, talent, or expertise to share, there is room for you to perform, teach, volunteer, or vend.

Curious About India

Experience India for the first time

You do not need to know anything about India to come, and you will not be the only first-timer in the room. Things are explained as they happen, and people are happy to answer questions along the way. Come as you are to watch, taste, and try.

The Wonderful India Journey

Light Color Yoga Wisdom Illumination

A journey across five cycles and 14 months.

Each cycle builds toward a celebratory anchor festival, with smaller gatherings before and after it. New to Wonderful India? See where it began at the 2024 festival.

Cycle 01 of 05 · Deepa

Festival of Lights

Festival: Gatherings: to

Tickets open now

The idea

Deepa is the small clay lamp lit in Indian homes at Diwali. One flame does not end the dark, but it is enough to see by, and that is where the series begins: light over darkness, made together. This cycle runs through the Diwali season, October to December 2026.

Cycle 02 of 05 · Raṅga

Festival of Colors

Festival: Gatherings: to

Line-up announced in December

The idea

Raṅga means color, and in north India color arrives with spring. At Holi people throw powder at friends and strangers alike, and old quarrels are allowed to end. This cycle is about renewal and play, January to March 2027.

Cycle 03 of 05 · Yoga

Festival of Yoga

Festival: Gatherings: to

Line-up announced in March

The idea

Yoga means union, the yoking together of breath, body and mind. Long before it was a class, it was a complete philosophy, written down by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. This cycle goes back to the breath and the stillness behind the poses, April to June 2027.

Cycle 04 of 05 · Jñāna

Festival of Wisdom

Festival: Gatherings: to

Line-up announced in May

The idea

Jñāna is knowledge that has been lived, not only read. In India it passes from teacher to student, and Guru Purnima, the full moon of July, is the day students honor their teachers. This cycle brings scholars, lineage holders and storytellers to Austin, July to September 2027.

Cycle 05 of 05 · Prakāsha

Festival of Illumination

Festival: Gatherings: to

Line-up announced in August

The idea

Prakāsha is the light that comes from within. The wheel turns back to the Diwali season where it began, and the lamp from the first cycle returns as something we carry ourselves. The closing festival, in November 2027, brings the music, dance, food and craft of the whole year together.

Visitor questions

Is Wonderful India only for Indians?

No. Wonderful India is open to everyone, whatever your background, beliefs or age. It is guided by Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, “the world is one family”, and is built for first-time visitors, mixed families and multi-generational households as much as for Indian Americans.

Are children welcome?

Yes. Children are welcome at every Wonderful India gathering, and the series is designed for multi-generational households, from grandparents to toddlers. Hands-on sessions such as the Rangoli Contest are planned with families in mind.

What does it cost?

Many community sessions and workshops run on a suggested donation. The five anchor festivals and mainstage events are ticketed so that artists are paid fairly. If you cannot afford a ticket or a donation, contact the team and they will reserve a community seat for you.

Where in Austin is it held?

Every Wonderful India event takes place in person in Austin, Texas. Venue details are released season by season, alongside each cycle’s tickets.
